Hey all,
I recently attended the Westwood College prom, a Masquarade Ball at the Westwood Golf club, Leek. At said event, there was a “surprise” (though most knew what it was going to be beforehand, truth be told) which turned out to be a Tarot reader. Well, there were two of them – a man and a woman – I don’t know if they were working together or not, as I only spoke to the male reader.
I approached the event with a heavy dose of uncharacteristic scepticism, unusual for me as those who know me will doubtless vouch for! Being well-known for open-mindedness to the point of eccentricity, I seem to have something of a reputation. I used to be very much “into” divination and various other practices, following a Pagan faith a few years back. Tarot, I Ching, Rune, Pendulum use, etc were all commonplace for me, as I was deeply fascinated by such things. Crystal healing and energy work was also often a part of my day, as was scrying.
More recently, having changed my faiths around a few times before becoming truly comfortable with my beliefs and theories, my spiritual side has been more focussed around meditation, internal martial arts such as Qigong and T’ai Chi exercises, and Psionic training/awareness. In short, I adopted a more “practical”, physical and scientific attitude towards my spirituality and energy work. Not to disrespect other ways of working; they just weren’t right for me. We all find our own ways.
Due to a lot of things I’ve been hearing recently from good friends of mine, and popular belief, I had become sceptical of Tarot readers, believing that they were in general fraudulent, and just out to make money from people who lack direction or the ability to take the responsibility to make decisions for themselves, employing psychological tricks to gain insights into people, combined with sleight of hand in card choosing, sweeping generalisations and suggestion.
I have no shame in saying that I was wrong.
So I sat down with the cheerful-looking man, dressed fittingly and with equally fitting crazy hair (and an awesome beard). He looked spiritual, if you know what I mean. The sort of person who would be in tune with the more subtle aspects of existence. This definitely seemed to be the case. Sitting with the man, we said hello and spoke a little about energy work. I saw on his card that he was also a practitioner of Reiki, an area I have always been very interested in. After discussing internal martial arts and energy work, and advising him on the benefits of both T’ai Chi and Aikido, we got to business. I chose from three packs of well-thumbed cards, choosing a blue one with an appealing swirl on the back resembling the Loop of Infinity, These were fanned out for me, and I chose nine cards (I closed my eyes – I wanted it to be as completely random as possible) which he turned over in turn and spoke about in great detail.
Now, I had the impression it was going to be great bounding generalisations and vague guesses at things that generically apply to 90% of the population. However, not all of it was. Some things, yes, were obvious and cards weren’t exactly a necessity to deduce some of the things he saw. For example, much of the reading centred around university next year, and about how much it will be a time of internal and external change. He must’ve said much the same thing to everybody, I thought. However, every now and again he would say something that suggested to me that there might be something more to it than mere trickery. Most of it I will not discuss here, as it involved private matters, including about my relationship, which somehow he knew was once long-distance, and knew that we would not be nearly so far apart next year. As I’m hopefully going to Staffordshire University (English), and my girlfriend has applied to Keele University (Medicine), this was definitely a hit. I also don’t know how we’ve done distance before either, as previously she lived 72 miles away in Leicester!
There was a lot more to the reading, but as I say that was between us. What impressed me was that nothing he said was wrong, or missed the point. Everything was exactly right, down to the fine detail of some things he said. Basically, the summary of it was that things will be extremely difficult, but in the end I’ll turn out ok, which is always good news! Also, I thought it too much of a coincidence that on the first card that came up the subject was wearing the symbol of my Zodiac sign, Scorpio, around his neck.
What I enjoyed most about the reading though was the man’s conversation about the issues which arose, and the excellent advice which he gave to me on a number of topics. We spoke afterwards about pendulums, crystals, etc and as before the conversation was very interesting.
I’m glad I did line up for a reading after all, because I did near the beginning of the evening, and the queue was so long I gave up a couple of times. As it was, I was one of his last readings, and he gave me a particular piece of advice which he said had been waiting all night too, and seemed to apply to me. It did.
If I took nothing more away from the reading, it was a renewed interest in spiritual aids like the Tarot. I gave my cards a shuffle that night for the first time in perhaps five years, and it all came back to me. I decided to focus for a moment on an exam I was to have on Tuesday (yesterday) – a resit for a test I made a stupid mistake on. (No idea how I got a B the first time when I only answered one question out of three; they must’ve liked it or took pity on me, one or the other…). I just wanted to see what would happen; if the insight was going to be at all pertinent. The Emperor came up – authority or control over the situation, and making the best of difficulty. Maybe this just gave me a subconscious boost, or maybe there was more to it, but that exam honestly went about as well as it was possible to. If it wasn’t an A, then I will eat a sprout. And the taste of them makes me actually heave, so that’s a big deal! The whole day yesterday went well actually – I wandered into a shop (the same one I found Desert Knives in previously: http://schamael.wordpress.com/2010/05/13/desert-knives/) and found something by chance that I’ve been looking for for a long time, and I was just exactly in time for buses 5 times in one day. That’s all just bumf though. The point was it was a good day, despite not sleeping properly the night before because I and my girlfriend (she more than I) were ill, so I really thought my chances of the exam going well were slim at best.
I’m glad my interest in spiritual activity as well as the usual Psionic practice has been refuelled as a result; it’s really enjoyable and it wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t spoken to this man.
