Plinky: What's something you never believed until you experienced it?

Well, there's a few things really. I'll just be brief here; maybe I'll write more about things in the future.

The main one would be ghosts, though strictly speaking I wasn't an unbeliever before experiencing them myself; I was merely uncertain. Whatever they are, I definitely know they exist now, without a doubt. I've encountered five that I can think of from the top of my head, and some of them multiple times.

I think I will write about my experiences with ghosts more in the near future, as I do need some interesting topics for the blog, and it will be good to record them reliably for when I'm old and forgetful!

I certainly did not believe that I would speak to one before a certain incident in high school, or more specifically that I would receive a reply!

Anyway, that's enough about that for now; I am a little uncertain as to whether to write about things like these in detail as a lot of people will probably take a rather negative standing on the topic. That said, I've been called mad for my various beliefs before, and it's never stopped me, so I'll see.

I used to be indecisive; but I'm not sure any more…

Windows 8 Rumours!

image

Flicking through my usual read-through of Lifehacker, etc I came across some rumours about Windows 8 is indeed in development, and extensive plans are underway right now! The image to the right is apparently a prototype machine, sporting a 5+-point multitouch display, infrared proximity sensor (for proximity-based sleep/waking), ambient light screen dimming/brightening, omnidirectional microphone, etc. It actually sounds awesome, and I’d love to try one out. I’ve been thinking of getting myself a desktop in the near future, but I might hold out of this kind of thing is due to come out any time soon…!

Apparently, over the weekend an Italian site called Windowsette got hold of some secretive Microsoft presentations, all about the planning of Windows 8. There’s a lot of detail on this site, which is where I found out about it:

http://msftkitchen.com/2010/06/windows-8-plans-leaked-numerous-details-revealed.html

What do you think though? Do we really need another build of Windows, or should Microsoft pay more attention to providing Win7 users with updates to add functionality, stability etc that 7 is lacking? I can see the argument for both, but I hope Windows 7 doesn’t become too obsolete any time soon; I’m already thinking of upgrading my hardware, and another OS on top of that could start to eat into my student loan…

Plinky: What do you like most about your job? (Or studies, etc)

Well, answering for the degree course I'm going to be taking as of September this year at Staffordshire University, the things I like most would certainly be:

- The fact that it's a 2 year fast-track course (English Literature), so I can get the same degree in 2 years rather than 3, by doing the second year alone over the summer.

- The freedom of choice in what I study – modules, etc.

- The complete lack of exams – everything is based on coursework and giving presentations, which is wonderful; coursework is my strong point and presenting is something I could do with working on a little.

- Because it's so close to home, I don't have to move or anything; I can (and will) just stay at home, saving money, time and effort.

I actually can't wait; it should be a really good course.

Plinky: "What's your favourite summer memory?"

It would have to be meeting my girlfriend at a NAGTY summer school which was otherwise becoming a little uninteresting as we felt herded rather than escorted around (the security was bordering on ridiculous).

Just being together on one of the hottest summers we've ever had in England; neither of us had any idea where those moments would take us, and here we are spending our lives together, 1052 days later!

North Korea: The Craziest Country in the World

Stumbling away for last week’s Weekly Stumble, I came across this image article. I was going to use it for the Weekly Stumble, but I thought it deserved a post of its own, as it’s important that things like this are read. After all, that is the main point of this blog; to show people things that I’ve seen across the Internet that I feel should be more widely appreciated, and to spread thoughts and experiences of my own that I feel might benefit others in some way (even if only to provide light entertainment).

I can’t speak for the validity of the information in this image, but it all sounds realistic enough. The sources at the bottom are reputable, certainly. I won’t be going to Korea any time soon (especially after reposting this image!) and I can’t say I’d recommend it to many people either, from what I’ve heard. It’s a real eye-opener though, especially if you haven’t studied geography or politics or don’t watch the news all that much.

People seem to think that because we live in the western world, and things are (mostly) ok within society on the whole, things like this don’t happen any more, and mistreatment to this kind of degree is a thing of the past. Words cannot express how untrue that view of the world is (however nice it is). People need to know, so here it is. As with the previously posted “Let’s Say (For Whatever Reason) You’re the First Human Ever to Make Alien Contact”, zoom in or click the image then zoom in if you can’t read it clearly enough. Alternatively just download it and zoom in on your computer.  Enjoy:

Weekly Stumble: Self-Actualisation

Hi all,

This week’s Weekly Stumble is a pretty interesting article about self-actualisation, a concept summed up in this quote:

"Self Actualization is the intrinsic growth of what is already in the organism, or more accurately, of what the organism is."

Abraham Maslow

The page is here: http://psikoloji.fisek.com.tr/maslow/self.htm and it actually loos really interesting. I’ve had a read through and it all seems to be a pretty good set of ideas to live by on the whole.

So, are you a “Self-Actualising” person? Or don’t you go in for this stuff?

Just a thought I wanted to provoke this morning :) Have a nice week people ^_^

Facebook: Keyboard Shortcuts in Firefox?!?

Hey all,

Previously I mentioned that setting up global keyboard shortcuts for rating songs in Mediamonkey can help you keep focussed while doing repetitive things like revision, note-taking, essay-writing, etc.

The shortcut combinations I used were Alt+Shift+(whatever) to rate 1-5 (I ignore the half ratings, that’s just too far…) because they don’t seem to conflict with anything Firefox, Word, Windows Live Writer, etc uses (though it does conflict with OneNote actually, so I might change the combination if I find another good one).

Anyway, it seems I was mistaken! In Firefox, these shortcuts provide quick and easy access to key features within Facebook! Here they are, listed below:

Alt+Shift+1        Refresh Facebook
Alt+Shift+2        View Profile
Alt+Shift+3        Friend Requests
Alt+Shift+4        Messages
Alt+Shift+5        Notifications
Alt+Shift+6        Edit Profile
Alt+Shift+7        Privacy Settings
Alt+Shift+8        Facebook’s Facebook Page
Alt+Shift+9        Statement of Rights and Responsibilities
Alt+Shift+0        Help Centre

Does anyone else encounter this behaviour, or is it just me? I don’t currently have Greasemonkey installed, so it’s not a script.

Working LEGO Printer: “Hello World!”

Hey all,

I can guarantee that this is one of the best things you’ve ever seen. If not, there’s something seriously wrong with the world…

IT’S A FELT TIP! Yeah!

Just amazing. This would go so well with the previously mentioned LEGO Router and CPU from a while back.

Thoughts? Comment… :)

Mediamonkey: My solution to the “not adding tracks to library” problem…

Hey all,

A lot of people seem to be having a lot of trouble with this, so I thought I’d post the solution which worked for me, which I found by accident, incidentally.

  1. Open up whatever folder your track is in.
  2. Drag it to the “Library” section on the tree in Mediamonkey.
  3. Restart Mediamonkey.
The track should be there, if your system works anything like mine. For the record, if it helps, I’m running Windows 7 Ultimate, on a Toshiba Satellite A300D-15B system. Administrator account, obviously, with UAC turned right off.
Hope it helps! Seems to be a fairly widespread problem that could, like it did for me, just fix itself…

Selective, Mindless Procrastination can Help You Keep Focus

Hey all,

Stupid as it may sound, this worked for me.

Over recent weeks I’ve been working through my A2 level revision, and at first I found myself, as usual, a slave to distraction. Facebook, Windows Live Messenger, YouTube, Kongregate; all of them called to me constantly, and quite often I listened.

Many of us have fairly extensive media libraries on our computers, and assumedly more or less all of us have music on their computers that they listen to fairly often. I personally enjoy listening to music most of the time, especially when working.

I’m one of those kinds of people – you know, the ones who always have to have things organised, know where things are, etc? My computer file system has so many subdirectories I should probably use a tree view, and I’ve set up everything exactly how I want them, down to window position, tweaked down to the pixel. (I kid ye not…)

I’ve become the same with my music collection. I want to have everything rated, but I can’t be bothered to sit there and go through all 917 songs (ok, not a huge collection, but big enough) rating each one.

The Solution to Problem A – Ratings:

I assigned a global hotkey for each rating, easily done in Mediamonkey’s (my current favourite media player by far) options. I found that Alt+Shift+(whatever) works well, as Firefox, Word, OneNote and Windows Live Writer (the programs I’m likely to be using while listening to music) don’t seem to be using those combinations. Simple! Now rating is as easy as a keystroke, and just as easily forgotten about while I get on with … whatever.

Make sure you check the box on the right to make the individual hotkeys global, or they won’t do anything while another window is in focus.

image The Solution to Problem B – Procrastination:

After setting up Mediamonkey I could easily and quickly rate my songs as they played without looking up from whatever I was working on at the time.

That was when I noticed something strange: the simple act of mindlessly rating songs as I worked offered me a kind of simple, fleeting procrastination every few minutes or so, but not something which required that I stopped working for more than a second at a time. Thus, my urge to waste time (checking Facebook, looking at WordPress.com stats, etc…) was greatly reduced! I found myself staying on-task much easier and for longer at a time!

This could be applied to other, perhaps less sad, methods of wasting a tiny bit of time every few minutes if you’re not as regimental with your files, here’s a couple of ideas, but you get the gist:

  • Get up and walk around the room once every x minutes. (You should do this anyway actually)
  • For martial artists: have some kind of target or pad up by your desk. Every paragraph/page/milestone/few minutes, hit it.
  • Allow yourself to check your Facebook only after set intervals or milestones.

Got any better ideas? Did this work for you? If not, what does? I’ll be watching the comments… :)
